After leaving the service, he spent an additional twenty-five years in medical device and insurance sales before returning to school in 2016 to seek a degree in History. Joe graduated summa cum laude in 2020 with a B.A. in History and a minor in Military History. Since that time, he has pursued his M.A. in History while working as an Oral Historian on the Maverick Veterans' Voices Project, a veterans' oral history project sponsored by the UTA History Department and UTA Libraries. Joe is a husband, father, and grandfather. He resides in Arlington, Texas.
